Writing Unique Wedding Vows

“I Have to Stand Up and Say What?” Tips for Writing Unique Wedding Vows

At the Wind Dancer Retreat, we pride ourselves on helping our brides create unique weddings and your wedding vows should be as unique as our unique wedding venue. Vows are personal, scary to say in front of everyone, and can put you at a loss for words. To help ease the pain, we’ve compiled some tips and tricks from our wedding planning guide for writing some Academy Award-winning heartfelt speeches.

Tips for Writing Unique Wedding Vows

  1. Incorporate both of your favorite things. Whether it’s an inside joke that the two of you share, maybe a saying from your favorite TV show, or a quote from a poem or song that truly means something to you both, it’s these personal touches that really make unique wedding vows.
  2. Talk to other couples. Include advice that you receive about what makes a marriage work, and promises that you are making to your spouse in front of all your friends and family.
  3. Talk to your Best Man or Maid of Honor. As well as you know your significant other, your friends might have some good stories and insights that you are unaware of. Maybe the first time you kissed her, she ran home and told her best friend that she knew that the two of you would be together forever. You can also include their perspective of how they see your relationship.
  4. Sometimes you just have so much to say but you don’t know how to say it. Just pour out all your thoughts and feelings into a letter that your special someone will get to read the day of the wedding. This could be used as your wedding vows, or something special shared just between the two of you during a first look.
  5. If you’re feeling at a loss for words, tell someone your love story and how you knew that they were the one. Sometimes retelling the story helps you to recall old memories and insights and brings back those feelings of just falling in love.
  6. Before writing your wedding vows, decide on a structure that you will both use. This will help ensure that your wedding vows match, but still allows you the freedom to put in your true feelings and create something unique to you. And don’t feel like you have to stick to one structure. Mix and match different ones so that it reflects the two of you. For example:

[Name] I take you to be my [husband/wife/partner]. I will love you unconditionally and without hesitation, for it is your heart that moves me, your spirit that inspires me, your humor that delights me, and your hand I want to hold for all of our days.

    I promise .

    I promise .

    I will .

    I will .

I promise to love, respect, and trust you, and give you the best of myself, for I know that together we will build a life far better than either of us could imagine alone.

  7. Don’t wait until the last minute. You know who you are. Even if you jot down some notes and come back later to work on it. You don’t want to be stressed trying to write your vows the night before the wedding.
  8. At the end of the day, these are your wedding vows so make them sound like you. Whether short or long, a poem or you rap your vows, express yourself in a way that reflects you, especially when you’re making promises to your future partner.

Unique Wedding Vow Examples

To help get some of your creative juices flowing, here are some examples of wedding vows that I found funny, but hit the mark on encompassing what you and your partner love about each other.

  1. “I promise to love you even when you refuse to let me watch football, to cherish you even when you blow one week’s salary on yet another handbag, and to understand you even when you are mad at me because of something that happened in a dream.”
  2. “I Phillip, promise to count every penny that comes into our grasp, and account for it using two-column ledgers and everything your accountant has done previously. I promise to love you, Amelia, unconditionally, in sickness and in health, till death do us part, even when you feel the need to accessorize with $400 shoes.”
  3. I promise to love you as much as the Chicago Cubs and not hold your black and white striped dress against you. From this day forward, I will listen to all your complaints if you say them during the off season, and promise to retire my baseball cap and face paint for public outings. I will love you in sickness and in health, from this day forward, until death do us part, or you become a White Sox fan.”
  4. Hands down, the best wedding vow goes to this anonymous teacher that allowed his 3rd grade students to write his wedding vows. It just doesn’t get any more honest, or cuter, than this! “Mr. Andrews promises to always sit by Ms. Morgan on roller coasters. Ms. Morgan promises never to change because Mr. Andrews likes her just the way she is. Mr. Andrews promises to give Ms. Morgan 8 billion kisses every day. Mr. Andrews promises to be more like Johnny Depp.”
